monet one and two

www.highlineopenstudios09.org check it out. Sunday October 18th 12 6 pm last opportunity to see inside artists studios in the Chelsea, High Line District of NYC. Go Kevin!!!

Hello. These are great examples of beautiful painting from Claude Monet. They are two versions of the painting titled "Impressions of a Sunrise" something like that and it was the beginning of Impressionism. I think that is true. I will check my facts and get back to you.

OK, Not so far off, The one on the left, is titled, Impression, Sunrise, 1873. Impression, soleil levant, oil on canvas, 48x63cm. Are you ready for this 19x25 inches. I've seen this painting at least once and I would have remembered it a little larger, at least 28x32. That's a small painting to have had such an impact.

This definition of Impressionist style is essentially valid for a group of artists briefly sharing the same philosophy between 1873 and 1875. from MONET by Karin Sagner, 2006 TASCHEN www.taschen.com

This is a new statement that I wrote before the show at Surface Library Gallery this September:

Currently his explorations with paint on canvas, in the studio are taking him to imaginary places with atmosphere and mood, where things do not have to make sense. The beginnings of this new work were shown at Surface Library Gallery Sept. 3 – 20, 2009

my new favorite painter

Hello. I am posting this studio photo that it is the property of Carla Klein, the painter. It is copied from the Internet so I think that is public domain. I feel like it is an invasion of privacy even though I have posted my studio, they are my photos and my decision. If someone else posted my studio views which is possible I would not be as happy. She is a "big" painter. Born in 1970, so skilled, with guts. You can read about Her process in gallery blurbs or catalogs and find out that She is very smart or you can just look at the work. Wow love her.

Saw the painting form the street and went in and so glad I did. I think from afar I thought it was the work of a guy but should have known it was a woman. Of course there are great painters of both genders but today, nine times out of ten the great painter that I might see is a woman.

I love making blanket statements. That one has been consistently true for a while. Of course there are exceptions like the Leipzig painters, six or so men, also born in the seventies for the most part.

Saturday morning in new york city

Hello. It feels like a long time since I've awoken in my apartment in the city. There is something so nice about it. The photo is of Accabonac where Jackson Pollack lived. He lived to the right of the photo.

Today is day three of the highlineopenstudios09.org tour. Hoping for a big day will settle for a couple of strangers. It is all good and I mean that from the bottom of my heart. Anyone that really knows me knows that...oh never mind.

My dear Mother turned eighty years old today and it is a landmark that we will all celebrate on Saturday the 24th. I had to be in the city for the tour so it was all changed for me. It makes me a little embarrassed that I changed the plan for my mother's eightieth for the opportunity to show some work but it is important and she knows that. Of course I would not have talked with Ula Ilnyzky of AP had I gone to RI. www.ap.org I am a news whore...when it is about me that is. Of course this was about the High Line Tour. Again anyone that knows me knows...oh never mind.

Life can be wonderful. Lily Tomlin once said "Life can be beautiful, but it won't" That always stuck with me as a brilliant sarcastic observation.

I have....you finish.

dinner and blogging

Hello. Something pretty nice happened to me today. A woman form AP came by this morning to talk about The High Line Open Studio tour, what it means to artists individually and as a community in Chelsea. It is an interesting topic as these tours can potentially bring artists together, maybe assist them in some sales and see that the community is smaller than it can seem. It is great for the public as well as they can see where artists work and, if they are shopping, get a good deal on some art.

While hanging out and waiting for visitors I am prepping dinner and at the crack of nine will be ready to put it together. Then I'll bring dinner over to John's. Yes I'm nice and He is not feeling well so I am happy to. I'm hooked on this sausage and garlic orecchiette with broccoli and some walnuts.

Just had a good friend visit and she really likes the direction of the new work and that is good to hear.

Ruth Reichl said on the radio the other day that dinner should take no time at all. I love that attitude and totally agree more and more. It seems with age I can throw a dinner together pretty quickly, basic cooking of course. my favorite kind.

Later.

day two of high line open studios 09 tour

Hello. www.highlineopenstudios09.org The tour is tonight and this weekend go to the site get a map (thanks to Randi Goldsmith, PR www.mediasunrise.com) and check it out.

This post reminds me of the Nicole Kidman character in "To Die For" Gangbusters.

Just thinking about the concept of community and what it means to me. In 2009 this concept has a very different reality. As an artist I don't know if I would ever have described myself as a member of an artists community or group. Even though at different stages I worked with groups of people. Those groups were a means to an end. We hired a model and split the cost and that was the incentive. Of course we became friends and there was some socializing. They were groups of people getting together with a plan to draw or paint.

I feel I am part of a small group out in East Hampton. For me it feels easier to be part of something out in the country. I've been very fortunate in meeting people that I like, who have become close friends and whose work I admire and look forward to seeing progress. One of these friends, Bob Bachler a ceramist, told me of the High Line Open Studio Tour and I hadn't missed the deadline. I went home googled and signed up. I then did what I normally do which it talk about it here and try in my limited naive way of connecting with the world, which is to link to relevant sites as much as I can on every post. Again in my limited understanding as to how the Internet really works I dove in and operate on the theory that more is more. So I link up as often as I feel and hope for the best.

From the beginning The High Line Tour Director, Kevin O'Hanlon was promt at returning emails and open to my inquiries and enthusiasm. I came to the tour a month ago and feel He welcomed we right away.

So today I think of community as much broader. I could very easily be in the studio and not have much contact with the outside world and I know I am not alone. Being an artist, like any profession where you alone are responsible for the product can be very isolating. When you do this for many years it becomes very comfortable and to break out of the comfort zone takes a lot of positive energy. I always felt that I wanted to be a social person even though I new I needed to be alone to make the work. Luckily I've been around social people that have made it easier to be out in the world.

Today the challenges to be alone in the studio or with your peers are greater on many levels. I can work and connect with so many people via blogging, websites and feel like I am out there.

Community has a much broader meaning. I realize this is not a revelation but it is not something that I think of consciously and it is good to see that there are many versions of community and in this modern world this is community. The Internet allows one to connect and be a part of something with very little effort. Hopefully the next step can be taken and people actually come together in person but connection is the key word and that is happening.

Lots to do today...hanging paintings

Hello Gorgeous. It's all about lighting. I realize that more now than ever. Regarding artwork that is. Looking at my paintings in my apartment and seeing that I need to pump up the wattage for viewing art at night. Bob Bachler lit my paintings for my show at Surface Library and He made them look great, like Hollywood maybe better than in life.

Tomorrow is supposed to start a string of bad weather days. I am going to say a little prayer against the weather god, not very helpful. meanwhile I have many things to do:
painting list, price list ,

This image is another view of my studio in EH.

old blog posts like old diary entries should not be reread

Hello. I never learn my lesson, rereading old blog posts can be terribly embarrassing. I guess more so if I knew that someone was actually reading them. Not to worry.

There is a short video of the reception on the highlineopenstudios09.org site. It was shot by Kevin O'Hanlon who makes documentaries about artists. It is really worth seeing, He captured the night so well.

So I had a couple of emails with Kevin O'Hanlon the guy who is responsible for the High Line Open Studio Tour. He is a great guy and so understanding and caring for the artists He is dealing with. I don't think He is treating me any better than anyone else. What I'm trying to say is that I think He probably treats everyone well. Although I should not forget that I am responsible for bringing Randi Goldsmith to Him and She has made the world of difference for the tour and my place in it.

I love this view of my studio in EH. It is the most beautiful raw space there is in my opinion. So I am back in the city for the tour which starts this Thursday and runs through Sunday. www.highlineopenstudios09.org

There will always be a lot to do

Hello. I was trying to upload some sites on my homepage that would supposedly generate some traffic through www.KiptonArt.com I went through the process and the link takes you to nowhere. I am not a web designer but I've had a little luck with a very easy program on mac and I think I can find my way around. How humbled I am and quite irritated too as I have spent some time doing this, not much just the waiting for the uploading process.

Back in the country and doing some things around the house preparing in the studio, cooking for and taking care of an ill John. That is not bad though He needs rest and I can do both. I made some red cabbage soup with chicken stock last night, lots of garlic, celery, hot pepper, John likes heat. It made it very tasty. Did I tell you that He is not really a soup person. I am happy He is where He is, it is not often that He is still relaxing.

new slate

Hello. http://www.ultravioletweb.com/ This is the woman that I was hanging with at the member installation for the High Line Open Studio Tour 09. I was not sure if she is the Ultra Violet of the factory fame but her is according to her site. Pretty amazing. It states that she was exorcised and then sent to America where she eventually became Salvador Dali's muse. Crazy shit.

I just heard the terrible sound of two cars crashing into each other down on Seventh Avenue. Still have not heard an ambulance so that is a good sign.

Yesterday's post was I guess the real me but it is not the kind of post that I want to write. I am going to edit even though my plan is not to edit myself somethings should to be edited to save face. Trust me it is nothing that anyone needs to know about me.

What's going on??? John and I are heading out to EH for a couple of days and I am going to do store things and take care of business out there. Then feel good about coming back to the city and concentrating on the High Line Open Studio Tour. www.highlineopenstudios09.org I am trying to upload the map webloc but that will have to wait till I get to the country.
